From the vaults!!!!!

Back pain still fully there - how long does it take to sort out a slipped disk? Not good. However it has given me a chance to sort out my archives - this is a song by my old band Trinovantes called Piece By Piece from 2004, long ago!!! Here is Nick Tann's podcast - we were talking today on skype and recorded some stuff for his podcast. Here is his current podcast which features my stuff and lots of other good stuff:

Da Remix

Matt Stevens Burning Bandstands Dougal Holloway Remix mp3 by mattstevensguitar Above is the first remix for my new remix project - it wasn't my idea(Dougal asked me if i'd be up for it), i wish i'd thought of it. I think hes done a superb job and loads of people have contacted me to say they agree. Its at least one thing i can do while lying on my back with a slipped disc. I put up a message on Facebook and Twitter a couple of days ago and I've had loads of great responses from really interesting people from all over the world offering to remix my stuff. Amazing how an idea can spread so quickly thanks to the interweb. So it looks like I might have 3 albums out this year a solo one, a remix one and a Fierce & The Dead One. Nice If anyone else wants to do a remix just let me know......

This lying on your back with a slipped disc thing is driving me mad still - however i have managed to listen to listen to quite a few podcasts and read quite a few books. I'm currently rereading nets and blogs and rock and roll - an excellent book about how the web has changed the way we discover music. Also I've started writing a book about guitar ideas for when people hit a "wall" in their playing. Podcast I've been enjoying include: Nick Tanns excellent Podcast - the BEST new music and festures some of my stuff,

Collings and Herring - funny but filth, http://www.comedy.org.uk/podcasts/collingsherrin/ The CD baby musicians Podcast - excellent info for musicians #081: Roundtable - Bolton Gets a Theme Song I'm listening to this MP3 of "When The Levee Breaks" by Kansas Joe and Memphis Minnie. Its from the original MP3 that Led Zep borrowed from - nice

On My Back

Quantcast Its been on odd few weeks lying on the floor doing pretty much nothing apart from talking to folk on the internet(I've got my laptop on my chest as I type this). I have 100% learned slipped discs are not fun. The track above is Moon Dial a preview of the new album which Kevin Feazey is mixing at the moment. We might also record a few more tracks for it - Glide, Scapegoat and one more that needs a title and possibly a guest vocal. That will have to wait until my I'm on my feet again. Also there is going to be a 45 minute 3 track album by the Fierce And The Dead which is Me, Kevin Feazey(bass/kaoss pad/tape loops and production) and Stuart Marshall(who plays drums on Moon Dial the track the above track) its electric and experimental stuff with tape loops and distorted guitars. Much fun. Kev is mixing this also at the moment. I'm very lucky that we recorded a lot of stuff before my slipped disc. Thanks for al the nice messages about my back - i hope this will all be over soon and I can get back to making music soon. Matt Stevens www.mattstevensguitar.com

Do you think we'll ever terraform another planet and actually migrate there?

Well really as Terraforming (literally, "Earth-forming") of a planet, moon, or other body is just the hypothetical process of deliberately modifying its atmosphere, temperature, surface topography or ecology to be similar to those of Earth to make it habitable by terran organisms. I can't see it being too much of a problem.I'll go.

Have you considered playing the ukulele?

I'm loving playing the ukulele at the moment - its very comfortable to play lying down while i get over my back injury. I'm currently playing Buzzcocks, Van Halen and Burt Bacharach on it. Lotsa fun and helps with the boredom of not really being able to do anything.

Do you miss having a beard?

Yes its very cold. I look like i have a very large babies head. Not good. The beard will return one day.

Why did you stop drinking?

I can't because of the painkillers i take for my back. I'm staying off the booze til my back is better and in all honesty i think drinking just slows you down. Controversial?

What would you do if you had to give up making Music?

I don't know - i think it would have a detrimental affect on my mental health. Probably make rubbish films or art - although i have F all talent in those directions. Music keeps me (relatively) sane or perhaps i could start drinking again?

If there was a fairy that would give you a working back in exchange for your guitar playing skills, would you make the trade?

Today yes as much as music is my life I can't earn a living from it.

Can you at least play Xbox or something?

Not really - just kind of lying on the floor with a laptop on my chest then doing weird physio exercises. Hopefully it will all be better soon.

Have you considered taking up an occupation that involves lying down a lot? No, wait, that sounds bad ... ;-) Hope you get your back sorted soon (and permanently) mate!

I've no idea what you mean. My friend Dave used to play the guitar lying on the floor so thats one idea. But yeah things with my back are very frustrating at the moment - its useful to have a think about what direction your life is going in thou.

how did the physio appt go yesterday?

Hurts even more now!!! The idea is that the exercises that he has given me will strengthen the rest of my back and take the strain of the place where the slipped disc is. I was in a lot of pain today and the electric shocks came back. Not good but I am hopeful things will get better.

Do you think that 'standard' tuning is a misleading name? It's only been common for a fraction of the history of guitar like instruments.

As fripp said its "mandatory". Its just that way because it was probably easiest for a luthier 500 years ago. The standard tuning is illogical(holdsworth has said as much) but I'm not going to relearn now. Maybe Fripps tuning is a better idea?
